After our opening prayer and song, we continued our study in John Chapter 18:12-40

Some of the key points we discussed were:

  • We briefly discussed Easter.  The Easter holiday with it's chocolate bunnies comes from a pagan fertility festival.  We will study more about Easter next week.
  • The Jews were not allowed to kill Jews so they had to present their case to the Romans and request they kill Jesus.
  • The Jewish leaders said it was better that "one man die" than all the Jews.
  • Jesus' prediction that Peter would deny him three times before the rooster crowed came to pass just as he stated.
  • Jesus was first taken before Caiaphas, the Jewish high priest.  They wanted to get some type of evidence to make their case before the Roman governor.
  • After questioning, Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the governor of Rome.  They could not enter because they did not want to be unclean and unable therefore to participate in the Passover festivities.
  • The Jewish people were trying to find a way to kill Jesus without violating their own laws.
  • Pilate stated he found no fault in Jesus and offered to release one prisoner to them.  They requested Barabbas instead.   Barabbas was a murderer.
  • We know that Barabbas was a murderer by reading the account in Acts 3:14

14 "But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;"
